Published Date: Wednesday, 1 July 2015

Having been providing high quality study opportunities through undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree programs under Eastern Mediterranean University Engineering Faculty since 1979, Civil Engineering Department boasts 36 years of experience in the field. The programs offered by the department have been delivered in the medium of English since its establishment. As of the 2012-2013 Academic Year, the department has also started offering undergraduate study opportunities in Turkish.

ABET Accreditation

Civil Engineering English program has been accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), the most prestigious board in the field of engineering. Boasting internationally recognised educational opportunities, the department aims to produce well-informed graduates who possess the skills, information, and experience in pursuing success in the changing and developing world. Along with a solid foundation in the civil engineering education, the department also offers an educational system combining theory and practice in line with the latest technological developments.

State of the Art Laboratories

EMU Civil Engineering Department Chair Prof. Dr. Özgür Eren stated that the department has proven its quality both at a national and international level through well-equipped laboratories, high quality education and research activities. Sophisticated and well-equipped Hydraulics, Geology, Transportation, Construction Materials, Structural Mechanics, Construction Technology and Management, Soil Mechanics and Computer laboratories play a major role in the professional and practical development of the undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Stressing the unique quality of the newly established structural mechanics and virtual reality labs, Prof. Dr. Eren added that through the aforesaid labs which are used for educational and research purposes, real-life experiments yielding real findings may be conducted.

Prof. Dr. Eren put forth that in the virtual reality laboratory, users witness actual engineering practices in a virtual environment enabled by sterescopic glasses or modified monitors. Through the use of the virtual reality, the users may conduct three dimensional analysis without needing the actual building or a maquette.

Education at International Standards

Stating that the department boasts over 20 full and part time academic staff members and 18 research assistants, Prof. Dr. Eren added that over 1000 students from 40 different countries study in their department. Prof. Dr. Eren put forth that all faculty members have expertise in their fields since they have been trained by prominent international institutions. Prof. Dr. Eren went on to state that academic staff members who have gained expertise in the fields of structural mechanics, structural management, building materials, geotechnic, transportation and hydraulics are leading academicians within the region. Prof. Dr. Eren added that along with undergraduate and postgraduate study opportunities, the department offers consultancy services within the framework of civic involvement practices.

Prof. Dr. Eren stated that the department boasts over 2000 graduates who have pursued employment opportunities in different countries. Since the construction sector plays an important role in a country's economy, a considerable number of employment opportunities are offered to civil engineering graduates in developing countries.

Stressing the importance of graduating from a department which possesses international recognition and accreditation as well as high quality academic staff and laboratories, Prof. Dr. Eren recommended prospective students to consider these important factors whilst choosing their universities and departments.
