EMU Signs a New Protocol

Minister of Higher Education of Northern Iraq Regional Government Dr. Pishtiwan Sadiq and his team who arrived at the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with a private jet upon the invitation of the TRNC Ministry of Education and Eastern Mediterranean University on 26 February 2015, continued their visits and meetings on 27 February 2015.

Minister Dr. Sadiq and his team as well as Rector of EMU Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and his team paid a visit to TRNC Minister of Education Dr. Özdemir Berova, TRNC President Dr. Derviş Eroğlu and Prime Minister Özkan Yorgancıoğlu. The visiting group also visited the Great Inn and Nicosia Turkish Maarif College and had lunch with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economics, Tourism, Culture and Sports Serdar Denktaş.

Following lunch, Dr. Sadiq and his team visited EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty and Engineering Faculty. Stating his fascination with the faculties and infrastructural qualities, Dr. Sadiq put forth that as a world university, EMU deserves recognition at every level.

Following faculty visits and campus tour, Minister Sadiq attended a Protocol Signature Ceremony at EMU Rector’s Office. The collaboration protocol settled between UK Worldwide Trading Fze and EMU aims to enhance the existing cultural and educational relationship between EMU and Northern Iraq Regional Government. Within the framework of the protocol signed by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and Ster Group Deputy Chair Dr. Hallow Talabani, both institutions will carry out mutual educational workshops and projects and award scholarships.

During the protocol signature ceremony, Prof. Dr. Osam stated that they brought together Iraqi minister and TRNC government representatives and added that the aforesaid minister exchanged information with the TRNC Minister of Education Dr. Özdemir Berova regarding possible educational collaborations. Prof. Dr. Osam also explained that during the meeting, both parties had a chance to evaluate the educational system of the TRNC and Northern Iraq Regional Government. Prof. Dr. Osam stated that the visiting Minister of Education exchanged information with the President of the TRNC regarding educational issues and prospective collaborations. During their meeting with the Prime Minister of the TRNC Özkan Yorgancıoğlu, information exchange on tourism possibilities took place. Prof. Dr. Osam added that tourism, education and transportation related issues were discussed with the TRNC Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktaş. Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam thanked Ster Group Deputy Chair Dr. Hallow Talabani for his contributions for the visit.

Minister Dr. Sadiq expressed his pleasure in visiting TRNC and thanked EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Osam and his team for their hospitality. Minister Dr. Sadiq added that he has found TRNC successful in terms of development and education and put forth that development may only be achieved through education. Minister Dr. Sadiq and his team left the country on 28 February 2015.
